Course Overview

This course gives learners the skills they need to carry out effective mediation in order to resolve disputes.

The programme is not only relevant to those who wish to become a qualified mediator but is of great benefit to anyone who manages people or situations and as such may require dispute resolution skills. Managers – whether that be HR or department heads, for example, recruiters, Gardai, armed forces and those in the prison service are all examples of individuals who would come up against disputes on a regular basis. As such, having the skills to effectively mediate in a professional and impartial manner would be of great benefit.

Our Certificate in Mediation is validated by Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI) at Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ) and is recognised by the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MII), the Irish Professional Mediators' Organisation (IPMO) and the International Mediation Institute (IMI). This part-time course combines a mixture of online and in-class lectures (with in-class lectures taking place at the weekends only).

Why Study Mediation at Griffith College?

Our Certificate in Mediation aims to ensure that the student will be a confident, highly effective and self-reflective mediator, with advanced knowledge of the principles of mediation and the mediation process. Benefits of the course include:

  • The programme sits on the National Framework of Qualifications and as such is internationally recognised.
  • Part-time study minimises disruption to existing work/life commitments.
  • Individual Conflict Dynamics Profile (CDP-I) assessments are carried out as part of the course. This unique assessment focuses specifically on conflict behaviours and provides learners with a tailored report that analyses their unique mediation style, gives customised feedback and tools to improve. Unlike other courses which require learners to undertake this costly assessment at an additional expense, the CDP-I is already built into our programme.
  • Graduates of the Certificate in Mediation are eligible to apply to the Mediators’ Institute of Ireland (MII), the Irish Professional Mediators' Organisation (IPMO) and the International Mediation Institute (IMI) subject to meeting the relevant entry requirements.
  • Regular mediation practice (both formal and informal) is built into the programme, ensuring learners gain practical skills which they can immediately put into effect.
  • All lecturers are either qualified mediators and/or practicing lawyers who engage in mediation on a day-to-day basis and therefore have the most up to date knowledge in the field.
  • Learners will acquire other highly transferable skills which would be attractive to a wide range of business sectors, skills including advanced communication and listening skills.
  • All materials will be provided and made available in class and through our online platform, Moodle.

What our students say

Mediation student

"On completion I definitely possessed an advanced knowledge of the principles of mediation and the mediation process. Both Paul Pierse and Mary Lou O' Kennedy were outstanding in their delivery of the course; they made it both hugely interesting and fun with a great emphasis placed on team work. I would highly recommend this course!"

Our Lecturer Profiles

Modules

This module will familiarise the learner with the fundamentals of mediation. It provides knowledge of the principles of mediation and the mediation process. This learning will be practised by the learners in their development towards performing as a mediator in more elaborate role-plays in later modules.

This module will also give learners an awareness of the impact of conflict behaviour on mediation, both from the perspective of the mediator themselves, and also from the parties to the mediation. The module emphasises the necessity of inherent emotional intelligence on the part of the mediator in this regard. It is sought to achieve this by introducing the learner to both academic reading and self-reflection on the area.

The module further aims to enable learners to gain an in-depth understanding of the theories, concepts and methods underlying the development and use of conflict management skills and to acquire the skills of competent conflict management of parties undergoing mediation.

The learner is introduced to the CDP-i tool in this module. CDP-i is an assessment instrument that measures conflict behaviours and assists learners in reflecting on how conflict triggers themselves and others in mediation. The assessment is completed by the individual by means of questions and rating mechanisms. Each learner receives a 21-page report and a 114-page development guide.

This module aims to give learners a clear understanding of the legal and ethical landscape within which mediation is practised so that learners may embark upon a career in mediation, confident of the parameters within which they work. The objective is to provide focussed knowledge of the legislation relevant to the area of mediation in Ireland, and where to find this information.

Learners will extend their knowledge of the principles of mediation as well as absorbing learners into the comparatively narrow legislative scheme within which the individual mediator and the mediation industry generally operates. It develops the learner’s understanding of ethical considerations in the field of mediation and cultivates their ability to evaluate the ethical code of practice of one organisation of mediators vis-à-vis another. It allows the learner to apply knowledge and skills and exercise professional judgement in identifying an appropriate forum for disputing parties.

Learn more

The primary purpose of this module is to prepare the learner to respond to a request for mediation, for activating the mediation procedure and for practising as a mediator to bring the dispute to an agreed conclusion. The module will enable learners to gain knowledge and to be able to demonstrate the core competencies necessary for mediating a dispute and to be able to transfer this knowledge to practice. The module further seeks to enable learners gain an in-depth understanding of the concepts and methods underlying the development and use of mediation and to actualise their ability to implement the skills to practice. The aim is to ensure that the learner will be a naturalised, confident, highly effective and self-reflective mediator. Finally, the module will enable learners to understand and to deal effectively and appropriately with issues and difficulties that may arise during mediation.

Progression

Academic Progression

Graduates of the Certificate in Mediation course may advance to further study in this area.

Career Progression

Through the Certificate in Mediation, students will have gained practical mediation experience, learned how to maximise the discovery of alternatives to litigation, and understand the key conflict resolution principles.

Mediators are trained and experienced in alternative dispute resolution. They are neutral facilitators who help the parties explore the problem, and find new options to resolve the dispute.

The enactment of the 2017 Mediation Bill will see Mediation come to the forefront of dispute resolution, and create new career opportunities within the legal industry.
