Chayeeta Sarkar
Trust and Safety is a growing industry, and this course makes it very relevant, because normally what happens is a person is focused on one particular type of operation or policy. But with this course, you actually have knowledge about the entire function of everything that happens.

Course Details

This course comprises nine modules taught across three semesters.

Course Modules

This module provides a working knowledge of computer programming and software development; it also enables the learners to understand the concepts of machine learning in addition to data visualisation.

This module equips learners with a sophisticated and critical understanding of the international media and communications regulatory environment. Specifically, learners acquire knowledge and analytical competencies in contemporary international legal compliance and regulation issues and trends, evolving policies and legislation across the globe.

In this module, learners analyse how bad actors have manipulated the features of technology platforms and their security features, as well as the developments and trends in misinformation studies as identified by academics, journalists and others.

This module equips learners with the necessary tools and techniques to critically evaluate project management in their industry. Learners are also taught how to best perform under the pressure of multiple projects and deadlines. This module also explores multiple tools for managing day-to-day operations, from project management to data visualisation tools used for business intelligence.

This module equips the learner with the necessary knowledge and understanding of the technologies supporting the tools used by a content moderation team. Learners gain a working knowledge of flat file systems, databases, and big data databases, their use, advantages, and issues. Content management systems are also explored to better enable the learners to interact with the developers of these tools.

Learners study the technology climate through a policy lens - its early stages, regulations and influences. Learners are introduced to the community standards of social media companies to better understand the history of toxicity, abuse and disinformation online and identify the tactics used by bad actors.

Learners gain the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to understand the concept and practice of self-care in work-related contexts. In particular, the module introduces learners to the importance of self-awareness and the processes that support ‘self-knowing’ within personal as well as work-related environments.

Learners deepen and broaden their communication skills verbally, in writing and presenting data as well as enhancing their competencies in practical applied critical thinking. Learners build competencies in active listening, report writing and interpersonal communication.

This module primarily focuses on the various ways in which today’s online threat landscape has become more complex and blended, leading to an array of abusive and harmful behaviours slipping through the gaps of current moderation models. By focusing attention on the tactical playbooks of threat actors, the module equips learners with both the methodological framework and the array of relevant skills to help them identify harmful narratives and unearth coordinated networks of toxic content creators.
