This programme is targeted at learners who wish to become in-house video content production specialists within their companies or who wish to provide these services to clients on a freelance basis.

Through the programme's four modules, Writing for Screen, Storytelling for Screen, Presentation and TV Studio Basics and Screen Production, you will learn the principles of storytelling for screen, presenting skills including TV studio basics, followed by the full range of corporate and commercial content production skills. First you’ll learn how to develop your content ideas, then how to prep those ideas through pre-production, and through producing, directing, camera and sound skills how to produce those ideas. Finally you’ll bring your content together through editing and post-production. This is all done through your own learner-generated commercial or corporate video production project.You will learn the principles of storytelling for screen, presenting skills including TV studio basics, followed by the full range of corporate and commercial content production skills of idea development, filming prep and pre-production, production (directing, camera and sound recording) and post-production and editing, through a learner-generated commercial or corporate video production project.

Course Details

The Certificate in Screen Media Production for Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) will equip you with skills to meet the video production needs of businesses, either to allow in-house team members to up-skill to fulfill the now vital function of content production and video communication within the company or to allow learners to up-skill in this area and become an in-house content producer. Where SME's need to engage the services of an all-service commercial production company for large-scale productions, this programme will allow an in-house team member to work on an equal knowledge footing with such a supplier to maximise the SME’s budget and make the most of the creativity and experience of the supplier for the SME.

Course Modules

This module demystifies the writing process by equipping learners with foundational writing skills aimed at improving their attention to clarity, coherence, and detail. Emphasising the importance of expressing concepts clearly on the page, this module introduces learners to the research and presentation skills required to write clear and compelling stories that are essential to the developmental stages of the scriptwriting process.

The objectives of the module

  1. The opening weeks of the module are focused on the essential writing skills required for clear and coherent communication.

  2. The second section introduces learners to the research process necessary to create development documents for film and TV scripts.

  3. The third section of the module teaches oral presentation skills and exposes students to examples of excellent oral presentations (TED.com).

In this module, weekly classes consist of lectures, tutorials, case studies and practical writing exercises.

This practical module is based on current industry best-practice in short-form screen media content production and emulates industry processes to equip learners with the basic practical skills to produce short-form audio-visual branded content/commercial content for multiplatform distribution. Learners are introduced to the practical skills needed in each phase of screen media production – pre-production, production and post-production – and make informed, logical and creative decisions at every stage.

The objectives of this module equips learner with the ability to conceive ideas and develop original material that is suitable to approach the production of a short factual item for multiplatform distribution. Learners make informed logical and creative decisions at every stage. This practical module equips the learners with a range of specialised video production skills such as scheduling shoots, scripting ideas, location filming, location recording and varied editing techniques.

 

This module provides learners with the fundamental skills vital to presenting and connecting with audiences either on or off camera. Learners are introduced to the essential production technologies in the multi-camera TV studio setting.

By forming an understanding of the universal principles of story and story structure in various modes, formats, and genres of screen media production, this module goes into concepts fundamental to storytelling across a wide variety of distribution platforms. Learners discover how to structure stories, develop narratives and characters while also focusing on the skills necessary to communicate and connect with audiences as clients and consumers.

The objectives of this module are to present a range of potential story structures and explore in-depth the classical three-act structure. This module also exposes learners to the story development process. Learners are required to write loglines, synopses, treatments and two drafts of a short script. In this module, weekly classes consist of lectures, tutorials, case studies, and practical writing exercises.

Timetables

The course is designed to be delivered part-time over one or two semesters 

If delivered over one semester (12 weeks) it consists of two evenings (6pm - 10pm) and one full day from 9 am-6 pm (typically a Saturday).  

Alternatively, learners taking the programme over two semesters may do so by completing two modules per semester – schedule to be confirmed with the Faculty. 

 

How to Apply

Entry Requirements

Applicants who have completed their secondary education, and are applying on the basis of their Leaving Certificate results, are required to have obtained a minimum of five subjects at grade O6/H7, to include English or Irish, and a grade of O6/H7/F2 or above in mathematics. Candidates with equivalent grades from other awards will also be considered. Mature learners, over 23 may also apply for consideration. 

For Certificate programmes, the following applicants will be considered: 

  • Candidates who seek the skills, knowledge, competencies and experience to fulfill the increased need for in-house video production capabilities to SMEs. 
  • Candidates who wish to become in-house video content production specialists within their companies or who wish to provide these services to clients on a freelance basis.  
  • Candidates may wish to pursue further study and may use this learning experience as an access pathway to do so. 
  • Applicants who have completed their secondary education, and are applying on the basis of their Leaving [of a minimum of five subjects at grade O6/H7, to include English or Irish, and a grade of O6/H7/F2 or above in mathematics].  
  • Candidates with equivalent grades from other awards will also be considered. Mature learners, over 23 may also apply for consideration.

There is NO portfolio requirement for this course.​

General Fee Information 

An Academic Administration Fee of €250 is payable each September at the start of term. For students starting in the January/February term, €125 is payable in February, and then €250 will be payable each September from then onwards. 

A 2% Learner Protection Charge is applicable each academic year in addition to the fees quoted. The fees above relate to Year 1 fees only.

2% Learner Protection Charge

All QQI accredited programmes of education and training of 3 months or longer duration are covered by arrangements under section 65 (4) of the Qualifications and Quality Assurance (Education and Training) Act 2012 whereby, in the event of the provider ceasing to provide the programme for any reason, enrolled learners may transfer to a similar programme at another provider, or, in the event that this is not practicable, the fees most recently paid will be refunded.
