Self-Care for Guidance Counsellors

Griffith College is hosting an online CPD-Approved, Self-Care Session for Guidance Counsellors with Ann-Marie Ireland of Breathing Space Ireland

There are two dates to choose from:

  • Tuesday, 8th of February, 2 - 4pm
  • Friday, 11th of February, 2 - 4pm

The aims of the session include:

  • To create a safe, restful space that the Guidance Counsellor can come away to in order to recover, restore and renew their energy levels physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
  • To offer a space for connection and empathic engagement with one another.
  • To address the core stressors that are most pertinent for Guidance Counsellors in these challenging times.
  • To offer simple but powerful self-care and mindful practices that can be implemented with ease into the everyday life of the Guidance Counsellor specifically.

About Ann-Marie Ireland

Ann-Marie Ireland is a former primary school teacher, speaker, researcher, published author and Professional Development facilitator who has worked in education for over 20 years.  She holds an honours Postgraduate Diploma in Education and an honours degree in Humanities (Psychology, Philosophy & Sociology).  She is a fully qualified Relax Kids trainer and holds a Professional Certificate in the Therapeutic Use of Mindfulness (IICP).  She has designed and facilitated well-being, self-care and renewal workshops, courses, retreats and webinars for teachers and school leaders within Education Centres and for educational bodies such as the INTO, NIPT, RTAI and the ESCI nationwide for nearly 11 years, including a Dept. of Education approved online programme for teachers.  She implemented mindful and well-being practices into her own classroom for many years, along with creating and facilitating a well-being programme within her own primary school for the entire school community.  She is currently a full-time PhD scholar in the DCU Institute of Education.

Ann-Marie is a passionate advocate of teacher well-being and believes that only through incorporating regular restful, safe, nurturing spaces within the teacher’s life will they be equipped to make connections on a daily basis with their students, with the curriculum they teach and with the rest of the school community.  These spaces may be one minute per day of breathing or a more formal session within a CPD space.  Teachers give of themselves every day in a caring role and whilst the essence of this role can often be a source of great fulfilment, it also requires a commitment to everyday self-care in order for the person within that role to achieve, to care, to counsel, to guide and ultimately to teach effectively, along with building and maintaining healthy relationships with their students.  Without understanding what we need as teachers, we cannot possibly tend fully to their needs or the wider needs of the school community.
