With strong representation in the radio, photography, film, journalism and magazine-related categories, yet again, Griffith is doing extremely well when compared to the much bigger colleges. The standard is even higher this year with the total number of entries from around the country doubling on last year's.

Periodical Publishers Association of Ireland (PPAI) award for "Magazine Student Writer" of the year: Aaron Rogan, Higher Diploma in Journalism & Media Communications.
The PPAI Awards presentation has become a major media event attended by the entire Irish magazine industry and are a real badge of honour for the winners. The Awards are open to all Irish magazine publishers, not just PPAI members, and as such they represent the accolade of the entire industry. Two of four finalists for live on-air pitch to co-host were Darren Cleary (1st year BA (HONS) Journalism & Visual Media) and John O'Donnell (3rd year BA (HONS) Journalism & Visual Media)Age Action Ireland national 'Positive Ageing' photography competition: Richard Ashcroft (3rd year BA (HONS) Journalism & Visual Media).
The aim of this photographic competition was to "capture positive images of older people in your community". The competition was open to both professionals and students. Richard's prize was a long weekend in The Morrison Hotel, Dublin and a shopping spree in Arnotts worth €2,500. Additionally, his photo was printed in the national press, used in an ESB advertising campaign and included in the Age Action Ireland travelling exhibition on positive ageing.

GCD, as ever, did exceptionally well in the 2009 annual student media awards, the sMedias, with Griffith dominating the Society Publication of the Year category (with 2 out of a total of 5 finalists); dominating the Small College Publication of the year (with 2 out of a total of 5 finalists); and dominating the TV Journalist of the year category (with 4 out of a total of 5 finalists); and Griffith media students were also finalists in all three of the photography award categories. With Tom Byrne winning TV Journalist of the year and Griffiti, the Students' Union magazine, winning Website of the Year.Griffith students nominated for the 2009 sMedias:

European Youth Press competition for European Youth Journalists: Tara McDonnell (1st year, BA (HONS) Journalism & Visual Media).
Testimony: "I found studying at Griffith to be exciting, interesting, truly educational, and the smaller class sizes meant that you got to know everyone and really interact with lecturers."
"I found the course was instrumental for me acquiring the skills and confidence necessary to be chosen as one of only seven Irish 'European Youth Journalists' by the European Youth Press who got to attend a three day conference in the European Parliament, where I worked as a journalist and sub editor for the multilingual magazine 'Work/Out'."

European Parliament Prize for Journalism: Angela Steen, Higher Diploma in Journalism and Media Communication.
Angela SteenThe European Parliament awards its Prize for Journalism to journalists who have contributed significantly to a better understanding of major European issues. At the award ceremony in Brussels, Ireland was represented by Angela Steen from Navan, the winner of the Irish competition [... who] studied Journalism and Media Communication [in 2007/2008] at Griffith College in Dublin. Fine Gael MEP, Mairead McGuinness, recognized Angela Steen's contribution to journalism, as well, highlighting that "journalism is a very noble profession and good journalism is a very important part of healthy democracy (...) Angela deserves to feel proud of her achievement."
