Mr Justice Frank Clarke Appointed to the Supreme Court

The Law School at Griffith College wishes to extend its warm congratulations to Mr Justice Frank Clarke upon his appointment to the Supreme Court.

Mr Justice Clarke was born in 1951 and was called to the Bar in 1973. He became a senior counsel in 1985 and had a practice in commercial, constitutional and family law. He was also a former Chairman of The Bar Council before being appointed to the High Court.

As a barrister he was external counsel to the Laffoy inquiry on child abuse and the Ryan inquiry and was also prominently involved in the Flood tribunal. Additionally, Mr Justice Clarke was noted for his involvement in many high profile constitutional cases.

As a High Court judge he undertook a diversity of work in such areas as intellectual property law, asylum and immigration law and constitutional law. More recently he has sat in the Commercial Court. He was commonly regarded as one of the finest High Court judges by his former peers at the Bar.

He is married to Dr Jacqueline Hayden, Research Associate in the Department of Political Science Trinity College Dublin, and they have a son and a daughter.

Mr Justice Clarke is noted for his warm personality and is a very engaging public speaker. He has been judge in residence at Griffith College for the last two years and in that capacity has delivered a hugely successful series of lectures to both students and the general public on a variety of matters of contemporary legal interest.

Griffith College at the Irish Law Awards

The Law Faculty at Griffith College was delighted to be shortlisted in the Law School of the Year category at the inaugural Irish Law Awards ceremony which took place in the Shelbourne Hotel on Friday 4^th May.

The only private college in the category, the Law School has a wide portfolio of academic law courses such as the LLM, LLB, BA in Business and Law and Diploma in Legal Studies and Practice( old IILEX programme), as well as running two courses preparing students for entry examinations for both the King's Inns and Law Society (Fe1s).

To date, over 2,000 students have graduates with law degrees from the Law School since its inception and a further 7,000 have undertaken legal professional exam preparation courses in the Faculty.

Law Librarian for national award

Congratulations to Robert McKenna , Griffith College's very own Law Librarian who was shortlisted in the Law Librarian of the Year category at the inaugural Irish Law Awards ceremony which took place in the Shelbourne Hotel on Friday 4^th May.

His appearance on the shortlist recognises the work that Robert has done in assisting students across the Law Faculty's academic law courses such as the LLM, LLB, BA in Business and Law and Diploma in Legal Studies and Practice (old IILEX programme), as well as his endeavours in assisting professional law students undertaking the Faculty's two courses which prepare students for entry examinations for both the King's Inns and Law Society (Fe1s).

The Law Faculty at Griffith College wishes to send its warmest congratulations to Veronica Duffy, ex -President of IILEX, the Irish Institute of Legal Executives, on winning the first award, namely Legal Executive of the Year, at the first Irish Law Awards ceremony which took place in the Shelbourne Hotel on Friday 4^th May.

Veronica has worked closely in the recent past with Griffith College in developing its Diploma in Legal Studies and Practice and IILEX and the Law Faculty continue to enjoy a close professional relationship.

Also nominated in the Lifetime Achievement Award was Frank Crummey, co-founder of IILEX.

A Public Lecture will be given by the Honorable Mr Justice Frank Clarke on Thursday 19^th April at 6pm in the auditorium at Griffith College .

Judge Clarke has been Judge in Residence within the Law School since 2010 and was recently elevated to the Supreme Court.

The Judge has been, and continues to be, an avid supporter of the Law School and is Chairman of the Irish Innocence Project which has made its home in Griffith College. He is an engaging speaker and there will be opportunities to ask the Judge pertinent questions at the conclusion of the talk.

This is a public lecture designed not just for lawyers but for those who may have an interest in legal issues. Terminology, as professionals might have it, or jargon, as detractors might suggest, plays a role in virtually every area of professional endeavour. It is often suggested that professionals use jargon to retain the mystique of the profession and, in effect, to exclude outsiders. There is no doubt but that this can sometimes be the case............

Innocence Project Lecture

On Wednesday 7^th March , 4.30pm , AF104, Professor Mark Godsey will be giving a public lecture by polycom to students as part of the series of Innocence Project lectures - ALL STUDENTS WELCOME

Mark Godsey is the Daniel P. and Judith L. Carmichael Professor of Law at University of Cincinnati College of Law and The
Director of The Rosenthal Institute for Justice at The Ohio Innocence Project which he established. He is an expert on DNA evidence.

As a federal prosecutor, Professor Godsey supervised FBI investigations, presented cases to federal grand juries, conducted jury and bench trials, and argued numerous appeals before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit. He prosecuted several cases that garnered national media attention, and received several awards for his performance including the Director's Award for Superior Performance, presented to him by then Attorney General Janet Reno, and a major award from the FBI.

Professor Godsey joined the UC Law faculty in 2004, and was a recipient of the Goldman Prize for Excellence in Teaching that same year. In addition to his teaching and scholarly activities at UC Law, Professor Godsey is an active criminal litigator. He serves as the Director for the Lois and Richard Rosenthal Institute for Justice and Ohio Innocence Project, where he represents convicted Ohio inmates for whom new evidence, such as DNA evidence, proves their innocence. Recent high profile cases of the OIP include that of Clarence Elkins (exonerated in 2005 by DNA and released from life sentence for murder and double rape), Chris Bennett (released in 2006 through DNA evidence from imprisonment for aggravated vehicular homicide), Robert McClendon (exonerated by DNA and released in 2008 after serving 18 years for a rape), and Raymond Towler (exonerated by DNA and released in 2010 after serving 29 years for a rape).

Professor Godsey and the OIP have also proposed several significant legislative reforms in Ohio, and worked tirelessly to get them passed into law.

In 2008, Professor Godsey was elected to the Board of Directors of the Innocence Network, the organization representing Innocence Projects in the United States and around the world. Recognized as a leading authority on wrongful convictions, Professor Godsey has lectured on the subject across the United States, and in Europe, Africa and Asia.

Professor Godsey also represents criminal defendants before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and occasionally defends criminal defendants in high-profile cases outside of the OIP, such as the Warren County murder case of Ryan Widmer.

Professor Godsey is a regular commentator on issues relating to criminal law in both the local and national press. He is frequently interviewed by local television news and newspapers, and has appeared nationally on Larry King Live, Dateline NBC, CNN, ESPN, BBC, Forensic Files, Court TV, the Oxygen Network, NPR and A&E's American Justice, among others. He has been quoted in papers and magazines across the country, including The New York Times, Newsweek, People and the Wall Street Journal.

Maths Revision

Griffith College is delighted with the success of its Leaving Certificate mathematics revisions days, which it held in April in Dublin, Cork and Limerick. As in previous years, several hundred students attended the sessions in person, travelling from every county in Ireland.

In order to ensure complete coverage of the Leaving Certificate mathematics syllabus (ordinary level), the College is providing a final revision day on Sunday 13^th May in Griffith College, Dublin (South Circular Road Campus). The topics being covered are listed in the schedule below. Students attending the programmes will be provided with all the course notes for the topics being covered.

All students doing the Leaving Certificate in June 2012 are invited to attend. The course is entirely free of charge. However, advance booking is essential as places are limited. This can be done online at apply online Unfortunately, students who have not booked, will not be permitted into the study venue.

All sessions have been recorded, and will be made available online free of charge to all students until the Leaving Certificate examinations in June 2012. The website address for the maths resources is www.maths.gcd.ie

Diarmuid Hegarty Honoured on Taoiseach's Trade Mission to Beijing

Diarmuid Hegarty, president of Griffith College, this week joined a prestigious list of academics and Nobel Prize winners to be awarded an Honorary Professorship by the Beijing Information, Science and Technology University (BISTU) in China.

Founder of Griffith College, Ireland's largest independent third-level institution, Mr Hegarty was also awarded Honorary Membership of the Chinese University's Academic Council reflecting the mutually beneficial relationship and friendship that has existed between Griffith College and BISTU for the past decade.

A member of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny's four-day mission to Shanghai and Beijing, this is Mr Hegarty's second trade mission to China. Noted for his near fluency in Chinese, he accompanied former Taoiseach Brian Cowan in 2008 and helped to secure education agreements to the value of €38 million to the Irish economy.

Other notable Honorary Professors of the university include Nobel Prize winners, John Nash, the famed American mathematician, and Edmund Phelps, economist and Professor of Columbia University.

Griffith College has strong ties to China having partnerships with 16 universities throughout the country. Over the past ten years, many BISTU lecturers have been visiting scholars to Griffith College and students of BISTU have also graduated from Griffith College while on their year abroad.

From Drogheda to the new government in Libya

She only revealed her identity this year such was her fear of the reach of Col Gaddaffi. However, today Dr Fatima Hamroush, the Libyan doctor who moved to Ireland from Benghazi with her family sixteen years ago, has become the newly liberated country’s first minister for health.

A consultant ophthalmologist who has practiced at Our Lady Of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda since 2000, Dr Hamroush has also has been a director of Irish Libyan Emergency Aid, a humanitarian aid organisation working with Libyans and non-Libyans from all over the world to ensure medical aid and equipment gets to Libyan hospitals.

Dr Hamroush leaves this week for Libya to take up her new appointment. Hamroush has said that that she felt she could not refuse taking a post in the transitional government. She said, “I couldn’t refuse this challenge, it would be like a soldier refusing to go to the battlefield.”

At the height of the revolution last May, GCD radio lecturer Anne Daly, interviewed Dr Hamroush at her home in Julianstown County Meath where she provided a unique insight into the oppression in Libya under Gaddaffi and how it had affected her family and led to the premature death of her father Abdullah Hamroush.

On opening night Emer Liston, the Chairperson of Writers in Prison Committee of Irish PEN (Poets, Essayists, Novelists) will talk briefly to commemorate Nov 15th - International Day of the Imprisoned Writer.
This is the first time Rough for Radio II has been staged in Ireland, perhaps in Europe. We are grateful to the Beckett Estate for permission to transpose this radio play.
This is also the first time the prose piece As the Story was told has been staged, and a rare chance to see Beckett’s last play What Where.

Mouth on Fire Theatre Company was set up in 2010 by Cathal Quinn & Melissa Nolan to perform the shorter plays of Irish playwright Samuel Beckett in conventional, unconventional and site-specific locations.
The core aims of Mouth On Fire are to bring Beckett to the general public and make his work accessible to those who may never have had a chance to experience it before.
We use his texts to bring awareness of the human condition, whilst doing so we aim to not only entertain, but also to highlight social issues. We are a theatre company with a social conscience and we will play anywhere and everywhere.

In the past year we have brought Beckett's work into homeless shelters, care homes, psychiatric hospitals and atmospheric theatres.

Griffith students achieve first in Ireland in the annual CPA examinations

Friday, 28th October, 2011: Eight Griffith College students have recently totted up the marks to achieve first in Ireland in their various CPA papers. Eight Griffith students have been recognised for their outstanding results in the recent Certified Public Accountant examinations which took place in May 2011.

The Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Ireland (CPA) is one of the main Irish accountancy bodies with over 5,000 members and students. The CPA designation is the most commonly used designation worldwide for professional accountants and the Institute's qualification enjoys international recognition.

Sarah Lowry achieved top marks in her F2 Information Systems paper and Elizabeth Stoll got the highest result in Ireland for her P1 Corporate Reporting paper. We are also delighted to mention that Alison Ritchie,
Oliver Clune, Lesley-Anne Hayes, Ronan Murphy and Maria Burke achieved first in Ireland in six out of the six P2 papers. Oliver Clune came out on top in two of the P2 papers and Maria Burke picked up the Strategic Leadership Award.

Ronan Murphy from Dublin achieved first in Ireland this year in the P2 ACR paper this year and last year for the P1 paper in Auditing.

On behalf of Griffith College and the School of Professional Accountancy, we would like to express our utmost congratulations to the students and lecturers for all the hard work throughout the year. Louth Students Recognised Globally for ACCA Exam Results

Rolando Cedeno, and Shawn Owens from Drogheda; Niall Donnelly, from Dundalk, and Katarzyna Kedzior from Ardee, Co. Louth, have all been recognised for their outstanding performance in the recent Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) examinations.

Students of Griffith College in Drogheda, following the recent exams, were awarded:-

Niall was awarded first in Ireland and sixth globally for Paper F6
Niall was also awarded third in Ireland and fifteenth globally for Paper F8

The ACCA has more than 404,000 students in 170 countries around the globe and 20,000 of these are based in Ireland. Since 1988 Griffith College has had a total of 289 students recognised for their performance in the ACCA exams, six of which have been first in the world. It is these consistent and unparalleled exam results that give Griffith College one of the strongest reputations in Ireland to study for these exams.

Griffith College Graduate wins Inspirational Arts Photography Award 2011

Steven Doyle awarded €1,000 prize for his work entitled "Time Served"

Griffith College photography graduate Steven Doyle was announced winner of the Inspirational Arts Award on Friday 23^rd September 2011.

The Inspirational Arts Photography Award was held in association with Culture Night in the Inspirational Arts Gallery, Herbert Street, Dublin. The award was open to all final year students on the BA in Photographic Media, with the aim of supporting emerging photographic artists.

Steven was awarded a prize fund of €1,000 to go towards his next project by renowned Irish artist Sean Hillen, who was the judge throughout the competition. Steven was also invited to hold a solo exhibition in the Inspirational Arts Gallery in 2012.

Steven said of his achievement,

"I was honoured to be nominated and to win is truly amazing."

"I would like to thank the Inspirational Arts team for their commitment to upcoming artists and also the staff at Griffith College for the freedom and support I was given to pursue this body of work with their guidance and for their for their continued support. I am looking forward to holding my first solo exhibition in the gallery next year,"

he concluded.

Steven's winning work is entitled "Time Served" was inspired by trades people who have been affected by the recession.

His work and that of his fellow nominees, Kamile Matulaityle and Ciara O'Halloran, will be on display at the Inspirational Arts Gallery throughout the month of October.

Kildare students, Heidi Monahan from Straffan and Colin Byrne from Newbridge, have been recognised for their outstanding performances in the recent Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) examinations.

Heidi, who studied at Griffith College Naas was awarded second place in Ireland in both her F5 (8^th globally) and F7 (10^th globally) accountancy exams.

Colin, who studied at Griffith College Naas was awarded second place in Ireland, and ninth globally, in his P2 accountancy exams.

The ACCA as more than 404,000 students in 170 countries around the globe and 20,000 of these are based in Ireland.
