Thanks to everyone who assisted with the judging - Mabel Swainson, Florence Ryan, Toni Martin,Anne Simpson & Bernadette Garvey. On 29 October 2008, The Leinster School of Music & Drama ‘Excellence Awards' were held at Griffith College state-of-the-art auditorium in Dublin. The prize winners were selected from the 14,000 students throughout Ireland who took part in the school's music and drama exams this year.

Maurice Wright has been named the overall winner at the National Excellence Awards competition; he studies at the Independent Theatre Workshop (ITW) in Ranelagh, Dublin and was nominated for his piece Karamazoo by Philip Ridley (which he performed at the awards) as well as The Passion of Jerome by Dermot Bulger.
Ryan Andrews, who currently stars in the Clinic and Fair City on RTE, took second place in the competition. Andrews is also a student at the ITW in Ranelagh and was nominated for his piece "Round and Round the Garden" by Alan Aykbourn.
The overall winner for music was Ciara Sheehan - from the Kilshanna Music Studio in Cork who performed her LSMD Grade two piece "Sonata in C by Clementon" at the Excellence Awards ceremony, held in Griffith College auditorium.
The overall winners received the LSMD cup and a cheque for €300 each. The quarter finalists for Speech & Drama were Ryan Andrews and Toni Webb, Dublin, and Allanah Scully, Meath; and for Music, Lisa O‘Brien, Waterford, Siobhán Clarke, Meath and Niamh Finn, Waterford. They won €100 each and silver medals.
A packed audience enjoyed the performances at the ceremony.
The adjudicators for Speech & Drama were Anne Simpson and Bernadette Garvey. The adjudicators for Music were Mabel Swainson and Florance Ryan.
2007
On Friday 2nd November 2007 the Leinster School of Music & Drama ‘Excellence Awards' were held at Griffith College Dublin. This is the third year of the awards which were launched in 2004 to mark the school's centenary year. The competition was open to over 12,000 students throughout Ireland who took the school's music and drama exams this year.

There is an Excellence Award for both ‘Music' and ‘Speech & Drama'. Sarah Jane Brady from Co Westmeath won the Speech & Drama category while Sinead O'Carroll from Co Waterford was triumphant in the Music category.
Sarah Jane Brady completed The Leinster School of Music & Drama Grade Eight Speech & Drama examination. She performed a piece of drama entitled "By the bog of cats" by Marina Carr. Sarah Jane lives in Mullingar in Co Westmeath and attends Anne Simpson for lessons.
Sinead O'Carroll took The Leinster School of Music & Drama Grade Eight examination. Sinead plays the piano and the piece she played was "The Castle of Dromore" arranged by D Parke. Sinead lives in Waterford and attends lessons there with Margaret Butler.
The other finalists for Music were - Aine Blake in Tipperary (Piano) whose teacher is Mary Larkin, Mairead Coughlan (Piano), who attends the Kilshanna Music School in Cork and Kilian O'Brien (Piano) from Meath and whose teacher is Siobhán Blake Lynch.
The other finalists for Speech & Drama were Niamh Lawlor in Tralee Co Kerry - her teacher's name is Helen Bayfield, Maria Boyle in Adare, Co Limerick whose teacher is Jacqueline Brennan and Kellie McGrath also from Limerick whose teacher is Maria O'Neill.
The judging panel for the music awards is Kathryn Smith, Mabel Swainson and Florence Ryan. Kathryn has taught singing at The Leinster School for 12 years. She is one of the most sought after opera singers in the country and performs regularly at the National Concert Hall.
Mabel Swainson and Florence Ryan have both taught piano at The Leinster School of Music & Drama for over 20 years. They are also Senior Examiners for the Music Diploma Courses in the School. Bernadette Garvey judged the ‘Speech & Drama' category she has taught with The Leinster School of Music & Drama since 1980, tutoring individual students at grade and diploma level. Bernadette is on the School's examining panel and examines students throughout the country each year.
The eight finalists and a number of students who were highlighted for "Special Recognition" were invited to perform a piece of music and drama to be included in the first ever LSMD Charity Christmas CD which will be launched in November, proceeds of which will be donated to St Joseph's Foundation, Charleville, Co Cork.
Due to the success of this competition, The Leinster School of Music & Drama are delighted to announce that the competition will be open to all students who partake in the school's exams again this year.
